Jersey scoops first-ever
Green Globe Award

The Green Globe Program
Jersey is the first holiday destination in the world to be given Green Globe status in recognition of its environment-friendly programmes.

The award recognises the progress Jersey has made in developing 'green' tourism, involving such schemes as coastal footpaths, cycle tracks and the green lane network.

It also acknowledges the UV sewage treatment plant, which has earned the Island accolades for its clean beaches and bathing water, and also takes into account the high standard of the Island's heritage sites.

The award was announced at the World Travel Market in London where Tourism president John Rothwell was presented with a certificate from the Green Globe.

It is a major acheivement for Jersey. To receive the first Green Globe destination award is recognition of the active programme of environmental management that Jersey Tourism has put into place to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Jersey travel and tourism industry.

Green Globe was developed in 1994 in response to the Rio Earth Summit, an environmental management programme for travel and tourism companies and tourism destinations, and has members in 100 countries.
